One Uchenna Ugwu, 26, who specializes in defrauding and raping women has confessed to the Department of State Service, DSS, in Anambra State that he was engaged in raping women to kill boredom.
Ugwu who hails from Enugu State, was paraded at the Department of State Service in Awka, Anambra State.
The suspect who confessed to the crime while being paraded said he raped women because he wanted to fight boredom.
It was gathered that the suspect is a member of a gang which specializes in defrauding and raping ladies while pretending to be spiritualists.
Most times their victims are tricked into displaying their ATM pins and if a victim refused to oblige to their request, they would threaten to inflict a strange illness on her based on the spiritual powers they have possessed.
It was disclosed that any lady who falls for their trick would be conveyed to an already arranged prayer house, where the victim is made to swear an oath, pledging never to disclose her experience.
After the oath is taken, the victim is raped on the guise of making a charm for her.
The arrest of Ugwu by the DSS was made possible due to a petition filled by one of the victims.
Ugwu, while being paraded said he dropped out of school at primary six due to financial constraints, and his struggle for survival led him into the world of crime.
He said, “I joined this business to fight boredom because my former work was not going on fine and had shut down.
“My parents, who are still alive, are poor and because they cannot sponsor my education, I had to stop at primary six.”
While being paraded Ugwu, pleaded for forgiveness, saying he was now a changed man.
“I have suffered a lot in the hands of these people (DSS) and I promise not to indulge in this act again in my life; this is a lesson to every young man that doing evil is not the best,” he said.
The Director of DSS in the State, Alex Okeiyi, stated that the hoodlums use several ways in deceiving unsuspecting members of the public, warning females to be weary of them.
“It is noteworthy that since agencies in the state with the support of the government kept kidnappers and armed robbers in check, undesirable elements resorted to fraudulent practices including rape,” Okeiyi said.
