22-year-old man burnt to death by landlady in Lagos

Residents of Ajegunle area of Lagos State are currently reeling in a state of pandemonium over the death of one 22-year-old Emmanuel who was allegedly set ablaze by her Landlady. Emmanuel died as a result of the injuries sustained from the fire.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Tuesday. Emmanuel was said to have gone to ease himself, leaving his father and sister inside their one-room apartment.

The deceased’s failure to return to the room raised suspicion, and the sister went out to check on him in the toilet. On getting to the toilet, she found her brother lying on the floor with his body on fire, and she raised alarm which attracted other tenants.

Emmanuel was alleged to have died after two hospitals rejected him.

Controversy has continued to trail the death of the 22-year-old as his family are insisting that he was set ablaze by the landlady and her children. But the landlady who is currently at large alleged that the deceased while attempting to burn down the house got himself burnt in the process.

It was further learnt that both families have been enmeshed in quarrel which the Ajeromi Police Station is aware of.

Reacting to the incident, a resident said officers from Ajeromi Police station should be blamed because they never did enough in salvaging the issue which ultimately led to the death of Emmanuel.

The resident said, “I blame policemen at Ajeromi for the death of this young man. Emmanuel’s father and the landlady have reported their misunderstandings to the police several times. Nothing was done to bring a lasting solution to the quarrel. Had they acted when they were supposed to, this would not have happened.”

The resident further added tat, “I woke up with the alarm raised by some tenants that night. We were told that it was the deceased that lit the fire.

“However, the question is how is it possible judging from the distance between his apartment and where the fire was said to have been lit? This is what the Police should look into.”

Police sources say the landlady is currently at large and operatives of the homicide section of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department, SCIID, Yaba, have commenced investigation into the matter.
