22 corpers absconded after orientation camp in Ondo – NYSC

The Ondo State National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, Coordinator, Mr. James Olugbodo on Thursday said 22 corps members from the 2014 Batch ‘C’ corps members posted to the state, absconded immediately after the completion of their one month orientation course.

Olugbodo, who disclosed this to reporters at the Passing-out ceremony of 2014 Batch ‘C’ Corps members held at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Square, Akure, the state capital, said those corps members were neither seen at the NYSC secretariat for clearances nor resumed in areas they were posted to for their primary assignments.

According to him, “Those ones, anytime they are back or ready for the service, they will restart the programme again for one year”.

While announcing that 2,738 corps members graduated from the batch, he also said the commission lost four of its corps members to accidents and illness during the one year service.

He disclosed that the NYSC had extended the service of 19 corps members, who abstained themselves from the service for one to three months.

Olugbodo said each of the 19 persons would spend extra months according to numbers of months they were absent from the areas they were posted for their primary assignments.

He, however, charged the graduated corps members to make use of the skill acquisitions programme they learnt from the camp, rather than depending on white collar jobs for survival.

The state Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Bekekhimi Idhiari, charged the corps members to prepare themselves for post service self-employment in order to ensure self-reliance.

Mimiko said “the training you acquired during your service year, and some other unemployment programme like youth enterprise with innovation in Nigeria [You Win], Graduate Internship Scheme [GIS], Community Services Women and Youth Empowerment [CSWYE] which are designed to drive government efforts at poverty reduction, employment generation, value re-orientation and wealth creation to position your future well. You are advised to work hard, pray hard and be creative at all times.”
