21 Reps, two Senators set to dump PDP

The ding dong affair in the House of Representatives over the party with majority members may soon come to an end, as 21 members of the House are reported to have notified the leadership of the House of their decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Daily Trust reports.

According to the report, the 21 PDP members have already written to the leadership of the House to intimate it of their plans to join APC, while two Senators are also said to be making the same move.

The APC, last December, temporarily assumed the majority status in the House with the defection of 37 PDP lawmakers to the party. That was however short-lived, as some APC lawmakers also defected to the PDP, though their defection was marred by allegations of financial inducement by the presidency.

According to the report, about 22 members have written to the leadership of the House over their imminent cross over to the opposition party as a direct fallout of the November 1 PDP ward congresses.

Confirming this development, Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Suleiman Kawu Sumaila (APC, Kano), said apart from those who have indicated their interest in joining the APC, his party expect more to join after the ruling party’s National Assembly primary election in the coming days.

Giving a clue as to those who are set to dump PDP for APC, Sumaila said the Reps members include Reps Jagaba Adams Jagaba and Isah Ashiru from Kaduna State while four of their colleagues from Bauchi State have also notified the leadership of their intention. Two members from Akwa Ibom State including Rep. Robinson Uwak and four others from Kebbi State are also expected to formally dump PDP anytime soon.

“We are certain that after the primaries more PDP members will join us in the APC,” Rep. Kawu Sumaila said.

Sources in the Senate also said Senators Atiku Bagudu from Kebbi State and Saidu Alkali from Gombe State are also talking with parliamentary opposition leaders ahead of their formal defection.

Bagudu, sources said is defecting because of a misunderstanding with Governor Saidu Dakingari over his return ticket, the same with Alkali who lost out in the just concluded PDP congresses.
