2019: Yobe senators disagree with Gov. Gaidam over APC governorship candidate

Two factions have emerged in All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State. The factions have Abuja-Yobe politicians on one side and Governor Ibrahim Gaidam on the other. Stakeholders in the state believe that the division is as a result of the last state congress of the party in Damaturu, the state capital which witnessed disagreement as Senators Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, the senate majority leader, Hon. Goni Bukar Lawan and others moved against the governor on the issue of delegates.

According to them, the governor was working towards derailing the chances of the party in the 2019 general elections.

The Bukar Abba-led faction told newsmen in Damaturu that they want primary election to be conducted among all politicians seeking the governorship seat on the APC ticket, as against the plan by Governor Ibrahim Gaidam to impose his anointed candidate on the party.

The Bukar Abba faction vowed that any candidate imposed on them by the governor would lead to APC losing in the state.

“That candidate will fail woefully because we will work against such candidate. We are in democratic system and not under military rule where imposition of candidate is becoming the order of the day. We are tired of selfish interest and we want democracy to begin to work in our state. So we would not agreed with candidates that are not competent,” Mohammed Yakub told newsmen in Damaturu, on behalf of the faction.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Adamu Idrissa, a political analyst in the state, told DAILY POST that the action of the governor will kill the party in the state in 2019.

“He want the party to lose the governorship seat and other positions this time around, else he would not have allowed self interest, when grounded politician in the state are speaking with one voice to allow internal democracy within the party,” he explained.

According to Idrissa, within the three years of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, people now know their right, they will choose candidates who would serve them better, they are going to vote for credible candidates in 2019, they will not accept imposition of candidates.

He added that the people of Yobe state want the next governor to emerge from Zone C, because since the restoration of democracy in 1999, the people of Zone C have never tasted the governorship seat as it has been re-circling between Zones A and B.
