The presidential candidate of the Alliance for New Nigeria, ANN, Fela Durotoye has reacted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) decision to postpone the Presidential/National Assembly and Gubernatorial/House of Assembly Elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, addressing reporters at the press centre of the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s Capital, said that the polls would not go on as planned due to some challenges encountered by the commission.
He explained that the decision to postpone the polls followed a careful review of the implementation of the logistics and operational plans put in place for the exercise.
Reacting to the news, Durotoye condemned INEC’s decision.
According to him, INEC through this development has made Nigeria a laughing stock before the international community.
Durotoye on his social media page wrote: “Many woke up to the news that @inecnigeria have postponed the Presidential Elections till February 23rd, 2019.
“The lack of concern for the millions who traveled great distances so they could vote is clear. No matter the delay, no one can stop the dawn of the New Nigeria.
“Our system thrives on making it HARD for us to get our basic rights,we make it hard to register to vote,we make it harder to get our PVCs, we make it difficult to transfer our polling units
“Now we can’t even keep to our own electoral time table, Imagine the loss of man hours, productivity, money and comfort so that we can vote.
“Most countries have surmounted this hurdle that we are still trying to scale, Now, we are a laughing stock to the international community. But not for long. A New Nigeria is coming.”
Also reacting, Media Mogul, Dele Momodu described the development as a serious nightmare.
On his Twitter page, Momodu wrote: “I pity the foreigners, media crew, election monitors, who are already on ground to work, and suddenly nothing for them, if postponed.
“Also, the candidates are worried about the safety and sanctity of the machines and ballots..Serious nightmare!”
