2019: Political parties sign peace accord in Lagos

Ahead of the 2019 general election, all participating political parties in Lagos State on Wednesday signed peace accord with the Lagos State Police Command and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the election in the state in 2019.

At a Security and Stakeholders’ Meeting with INEC and Political Parties organized by the Police Command at the Officers Mess in Ikeja Lagos, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Edgal Imohim, in a welcome address, said the meeting was convened on the heels of the destruction of billboard and posters of a governorship candidate in the state.

He said the issues towards ensuring a crisis-free electioneering process and other security matters would be taken care of.

He hinted that a communique would be issued after the meeting.

Imohimi said that Lagos is a politically-mature state because they have been accommodating one another, calling on political parties to caution their supporters against violence as the police would not hesitate to arrest anyone found instigating violence.

Also speaking, the Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Sam Olumegbon said political parties should focus on issue-based campaign during electioneering, saying that the commission would not tolerate hate speech or unguarded utterance in order to ensure peaceful election.

He appealed to politicians not to see the elections as a do or die affair, advising their supporters to refrain from acts capable of causing the breakdown of law and order.

He noted that it is in an atmosphere of peace that the election could take place, warning that political parties should desist from crisis.
