Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Adamu Muhammed, has alerted Nigerians of the plot by desperate politicians to perpetuate electoral fraud during the forthcoming general election through the use of fake policemen at polling units.
DAILY POST reports that the IGP raised the alarm on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting on partnership for monitoring, documenting, reporting and prosecuting vote trading during the 2019 polls, which held at the YarAdua centre in Abuja.
According to him, the police were aware that police uniforms and military regalia have been shipped into the country to be distributed to, and used by impostors on election day to cause mayhem and disrupt the conduct of peaceful and credible elections.
However, he said that instruction has been issued by the Force hierarchy to the effect that any policeman seen at a polling unit without the official accreditation and name tags should be arrested and investigated as an impersonator.
“We charge our personnel to be professional and unbiased. Every policeman you see at the polling unit, if he doesn’t carry official tag and name tag is a fake policeman and should be arrested, because we have reports that a lot of police uniforms and military regalia are being brought into the country by desperate people. We also know that there are people that are ready to dress in police uniforms during the elections,” he said.
The IGP reiterated that no security personnel is expected to carry fire arms around the polling centres, adding that the ban on elites moving around with police orderlies during elections still subsists.
