The faction of the Enugu State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) loyal to the Minister of foreign affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama has opted for direct primary in choosing candidates for the 2019 election.
The faction is being led by Deacon Okey Ogbodo.
It was gathered that the party took the stand during their expanded meeting in Enugu on Thursday.
An official letter to that effect was written to the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
The letter obtained by DAILY POST was titled, “APC ENUGU STATE: ADOPTION OF DIRECT PRIMARIES”.
It was signed by Deacon Okey Ogbodo and Mr. Ikechukwu Oloto, in their position as chairman and secretary, respectively.
Part of the letter reads, “This meeting held in Enugu on 6th September 2018 unanimously resolved to adopt, and in accordance to Article 20 of APC Constitution for the ‘Nomination of Candidates’ for state house of assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, Governor, to be through direct primary election to be conducted at the appropriate level.
“We note particularly that our decision is also in line with the decision of the National Executive Committee(NEC) of our party to also conduct the nomination of Candidate for the President by direct primary election.”
The party further expressed optimism that the procedure of going through direct primaries would let all hands to be on deck, particularly in Enugu state, where only one political party had held sway since the advent of the present political dispensation.
“We state that having achieved this level of consensus desired on the matter, we are in a better stead to produce credible, popular candidates capable and with the strength of will to represent APC and win in the 2019 General Elections in Enugu state,” they added.
Both Minister of foreign affairs, Onyeama and Barr. Mrs Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagu, the Special adviser on Justice Reforms to President Buhari, were represented at the meeting.
