2019 elections: Sultan of Sokoto tells Pastors, Imams what to do

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on religious leaders to be neutral before, during and after the forthcoming general elections.

Abubakar explained that such will enhance national cohesion.

The Sultan spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at the 2nd General Assembly of the Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace (IDFP), with the theme, ‘‘General Elections and National Security: the Role of Interfaith Communities.”

He also cautioned religious leaders against allowing themselves to be bought by politicians for their selfish interest. According to Abubakar, “As religious leaders, we should becareful about what we say to our followers in churches and mosque bearing in mind that we will all one day stands before Allah and account for our deeds. “We should never allow ourselves to be used by any political party or candidate.

“If you want to support any party or candidates do it personally.”

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, quoted the Sultan as saying politicians should be responsive and uphold national interest by playing politics according to the rules and be ready for free, fair and credible elections.
