Chief Debe Odimegwu-Ojukwu, son of the late Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, has stated why Presisent Muhammadu Buhari should drop his second term bid.
Ojukwu said the president was old and that the demands of the nations’s top job would even weigh him down more if he continued in office.
“It is degradation of strength that makes hirelings take over the government and they are now doing so many things the President Muhammadu Buhari could not do”, he told New Telegraph.
“Do you remember when he was with the late Tunde Idiagbon, a fly cannot pass Buhari then, but now, so many things are going past him.
“He can just ask them, have you gone to Sokoto or Jigawa to do XYZ, they will tell him yes we have done it. Because of his age, he will just take it as already done and he will go to sleep. That is nature and you can’t cheat it.”
Ojukwu further noted that the North should look inwards and present a youthful candidate in 2019.
“The nation needs speed to tackle the many challenges bedevilling it. They should present a youth that has power and strength to do these things”, he said.
“When I looked at it, at a point in the life of this country history had it that the Northern establishment felt they didn’t have enough representation in the military because most of the army officers were from the South-East.
“So, they wanted to have their own people in the military. So, Ahmadu Bello now sent some of them like Babangida, Abacha and the rest of them to come and join. But when they came for recruitment, their heights was short and they couldn’t join.
“The gentleman handling the stuff told him that they are short and are not qualified to join the army. But, Ahmadu Bello said no, train them and bring them to the North so that they can become the Northern army.
“Based on that, most of the old northern army officers owe a lot gratitude to Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa. So, if you position the son very well and the man has a big sense of history, he will not say no.
“If this man is senile and becoming lethargic because of his age, why don’t you get another young man from the North and let him complete the remaining four years?
“The North should complete their term and nobody should distort the current arrangement because we don’t want the reoccurrence of what happened in the past. Let a young man from the North take over and after four years we will go to another place,” he stated.
