Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal is returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to fulfill his ambition of becoming Nigeria’s President in 2019, DAILY POST understands.
An impeccable source told our correspondent, Thursday night, that the reason for Tambuwal’s defection was not entirely because of the crisis in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The source, who is close to the leadership of both parties, stated that Tambuwal is set to dump the ruling party having been assured of the PDP presidential ticket.
He said: “You know the man in Rivers (Governor Wike) runs the party. I have information that he and Tambuwal engaged in series of discussions.
“The high point of the talks is that Tambuwal would become the party’s flag bearer later this year.
“The former House of Representatives Speaker can easily get a second term ticket being the incumbent governor, but he has decided to leave because he is eyeing a higher position.”
Reminded that other prominent figures were also in the race, the source replied: “I repeat, Tambuwal will most likely get the ticket. As of this hour, that’s the permutation”.
Early in the month, Tambuwal dissolved the State Executive Council which comprises his commissioners and some special advisers.
A statement by his Director General Media and Public Affairs, Abubakar Shekara, explained that the dissolution would pave way for “restructuring and re-strategising the cabinet for optimum efficiency and service delivery to the people of State”.
But the sack, according to sources, was part of the process to exit the APC. A new cabinet would be announced after the governor makes his return to the PDP official.
DAILY POST reports that others seeking the PDP ticket are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; ex-Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido; Governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo; ex-Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa; ex-Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Markafi; ex-Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki SAN and ex-Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable released in January mandates all political parties to conduct party primaries, including resolution of disputes arising from the primaries between August 18 and October 7, 2018.
