The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria, CCSON, has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to shun any negative tendency that may derail the nation’s democracy though undue favoritism and nepotic appointments.
This came following the appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari, said to be President Muhammadu Buhari’s niece, as Head of INEC Collation centre by the chairman of the commission, Professor Yakubu Mahmoud.
The CCSON, the umbrella body of all civil society groups in Nigeria, in a statement by the Director of Programme of the group, Pat Anyanwu, also warned security agents to be neutral while card readers should be used for the election.
The coalition said, “the appointment of Zakari to head the INEC Collation centre is morally wrong due to her relationship with one of the contestants(President Buhari).
“It is only here in Nigeria that office holders still stay in office to contest elections in Nigeria, a situation that make them use their offices to rig themselves into office again.
“We advocates that office holders should resign six months to an election if they desire the re-contest elections. Again, the Coalition has concluded plan to organize a Save Democracy Rally throughout the country by late January to demand for credible elections next month.”
