Major stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Tuesday held a meeting at the state secretariat in Maiduguri, following which they unanimously adopted indirect primaries for selection of candidates for governorship, Senate, Representatives and State Assembly in the 2019 elections.
Those in attendance included serving and former deputy governors, all three Senators representing Borno, members of House of Representatives, all State Assembly members, all executives at the State, local government and ward levels, other serving and former public office holders, party chieftains and aspirants
After series of consultations at the meeting that was chaired by APC chairman in the state, Ali Bukar Dalori, the state secretary of the party, Alhaji Bello Ayuba, called for motion for adoption of method for selection of candidates.
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing southern Borno moved a motion for adoption of indirect primaries, while a member of House of Representatives, Asabe Vilita Bashir, representing Damboa/Chibok/Gwoza federal constituency seconded the motion with all stakeholders applauding. The meeting adopted the motion.
Dalori said the meeting was in compliance with a resolution reached at the APC’s National Executive Council meeting, which adopted direct primaries for election of presidential candidate, while state chapters of the party were to determine their mode of primaries after stakeholders meeting.
“We have unanimously adopted the indirect primaries in Borno, and nobody should come to tell us that we are for direct primaries,” Dalori said.
List of participants at the stakeholders meeting include amongst many others, the three Senators Representing Borno North, Central and Southern Senatorial District, Abubakar Kyari, Alhaji Baba Kaka Garbai and Mohammed Ndume respectively; several House of representative members at the national assembly, Hon. Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Kadiri Rahis, Aliyu Betara, Asabe Vilita Bashir as well as House of Assembly members.
Others were Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Usman Mamman Durkwa who stood in for Governor Kashim Shettima that is out of the country for official engagement in Germany.
Senator Abubakar Kyari, Mohammed Tahir Monguno and Speaker, Abdulkareem Lawal each spoke on behalf of their colleagues said, after due consultations, they have all endorsed and agreed to go for ‘Indirect Primaries’ at all elective positions on the platform of the ruling APC in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, his Deputy, Mamman Durkwa thanked all the stakeholders for convening the meeting which he said was timely.
“The decision unanimously adopted on indirect Primaries is a good omen to our Democracy. We assure all and sundry that the present administration will join teaming supporters of APC to ensure unprecedented victory in 2019 through free and fair elections,” Durkwa said.
