2019: Aspirant, 4000 APC, PDP, APGA members defect to Labour Party in Abia

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, about 4,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and the All Progressives Congress, APC, have dumped their parties for the Labour Party, LP, in Abia state.

The defectors were members of their respective parties in Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South local government areas of Abia state.

The three local government areas made up the Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency.

The APC, PDP and APGA decampees were led into the Labour Party by a House of Representatives aspirant for Ikwuano/Umuahia constituency during the just-concluded APGA primaries, Ambassador Charles Nzechi.

Speaking with newsmen on Saturday, shortly after a political function in Umuahia, the state capital, Nzechi, who is now the Labour Party candidate for Ikwuano/Umuahia seat, said he joined LP with four thousand of his supporters cut across the three local government areas in the constituency.

He said that Labour Party was poised to enthrone the needed change in the state, expressing confidence that the party will win all elective positions come 2019.

DAILY POST had in October, reported that Nzechi, a House of Representatives aspirant at the just-concluded primaries of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Abia state, has renounced his membership of the party.

Nzechi announced his decision in a letter addressed to the APGA chairman in his Isingwu ward, in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state and made available to newsmen in Umuahia, the Abia state capital.

The letter reads, “I want to sincerely thank you and the party, especially Isingwu ward and Umuahia North, for the support, encouragements and opportunity in the course of my membership of the party.

“However, just as Martin Luther King Jr. said, “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.

“My Chairman, by this letter I resign my membership of the party. It was a great experience fellowshipping with you all. May God continue to guide and protect you all.”
