2019: Adamawa students factional unions battle for relevance

A faction of the National Union of Adamawa State Students (NUADSS) has disowned another faction which endorsed the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Emmanuel Bello, as the choice of the students’ body after criticising Governor Mohammed Jibrilla Bindow for allegedly neglecting the education sector.

A students body led by one Bilal Abdullahi had organised a press briefing in Yola on Tuesday, criticising the state government particularly for not paying scholarship to students even after making students to buy form for that purpose.

Abdullahi had cited this as the reason the students body was rejecting the incumbent governor and accepting the SDP governorship candidate as the one that the students would support for the general election.

Conversely, however, the leadership of NUADSS led by Comrade Luqman Rafa’u held a counter press briefing Thursday, dismissing Bilal’s NUADSS as fake.

Lukman told members of the Adamawa State Correspondents’ Chapel, “We want to categorically state that the union has only one leadership elected by Congress under Comrade Luqman Rafa’u and it is the only one saddled with the responsibility to speak on behalf of the Adamawa State students pressure group.”

In rejecting the Umar Jibrilla’s administration, factional NUADSS’ leader, Bilal had said at his Tuesday briefing, “We have been promised and disappointed by the current administration. We were promised the payment of scholarship and related welfare packages. Students were asked to purchase forms at N500. They did. No effort has been made for the payment (of the scholarship) up till now.”

Commenting on the issue of scholarship in their counter press conference Thursday, Luqman Rafa’u’s NUADSS said they would make their stand known and take necessary actions “very soon”.
