2019: Abia stakeholders speak on APC’s adoption of direct primaries

Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia state, Thursday, reacted to the unanimous adoption of direct primaries by stakeholders of the party in choosing all its candidates for next year’s general election.

Recall that DAILY POST had on Wednesday reported that major stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia state adopted direct primaries for all its aspirants jostling for elective positions in the 2019 election.

Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday in Umuahia, the state capital, Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, one of the governorship aspirants, said he was satisfied with the arrangement, adding that it will give them an opportunity to test their popularity.

Chidi Ibeleme, a leader of the party in Umuahia North local government area of Abia State, in his reaction, said the adoption of direct primaries by the party stakeholders would deepen internal democracy in the state chapter of the APC.

He commended aspirants vying for elective positions under the APC for unanimously agreeing to adopt direct primaries in the interest of the party.

Also speaking on the development, another governorship aspirant on the APC platform, Chief Friday Nwosu, expressed satisfaction with the adoption of direct primaries by the state leadership of the APC.

He said, “I’m satisfied and happy with the adoption of direct primaries. That will ensure people go to the grassroots and get elected or nominated as party flag bearers for the coming election.

” So, I’m in agreement with the decision. I want us to bring out our best eleven in the upcoming election. The state will be won by APC if we decide well in our activities and strategy.”

The APC chieftain, however, urged members to choose candidates that are acceptable and sell-able so as to enable the party win in the coming election.

Also speaking, an APC chieftain and aspirant for Umuahia East constituency of Abia, Comrade Felix Onyemaife, hailed the development.

He said, “I am happy with the decision of the party to adopt direct primaries. It is a welcome development. APC rules and regulation abides that the party supremacy supersedes individuals.

“So, we all as loyal party members of APC, have to go with the party’s rules. Hence the party has decided to go with direct primaries. I don’t think me or any other aspirants have another choice, rather than go with the party’s decision”.
