Nigeria began their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, with a 2-1 win over Zambia in Ndola on Sunday.
The hosts started brightly and put the Super Eagles on the backfoot. But Gernot Rohr’s men eventually grew into the game and took the lead through Alex Iwobi.
The Arsenal man found himself free inside the box and volleyed in a loose ball past Kennedy Mweene. Another Premier League player, Kelechi Iheancho, doubled Nigeria’s advantage shortly before the interval.
Iheanacho collected the ball, showed great composure, and slot in from a narrow angle.
Although the Chipolopolo came out fighting in the second half, the Nigerians absorbed most of the pressure. It did not stop Collins Mbesuma, from rifling past Carl Ikeme, who had an excellent game.
Nigeria now top Group B with three points, pending the outcome of the match between Algeria and Cameroon.
