2018 World Cup: Nigerians react as Super Eagles jersey sell above minimum wage

The newly-released Super Eagles kit for the 2018 World Cup has triggered reactions on social media over its price.

This was sequel to a record of the jerseys being sold out at Nike store in some minutes after its release.

According to reports, foreigners and Nigerians were literally seen on queues at Nike Town for the launch of the Nigerian kit.

Some Nigerians took to Twitter to express excitement at the worldwide recognition of the jersey even as they called for a restock of the kit.

However, others compared the price range of the jersey with the national minimum wage in Nigeria.

Below are some comments gathered by DAILY POST from Twitter:

@pharouk_abdul “Naija’s jersey getting worldwide accolades Nike outdid themselves, got people who aren’t even from Africa wanting to wear the kit.”

@Iamjaybee “Nike definitely wasn’t ready for Nigerians.”

@bodealonge “A Jersey some sports analysts & other Nigerians condemned when first designed is now been rushed & even sold out in stores on its 1st day of official release by Nike. It’s also voted one of the best to d World Cup by several platforms.Says a lot about our mentality as a people.”

@biolakazeem “The main thing that I see is that Nike have serious supply chain problems. They kit Brazil & England & those 2 are the highest selling national team jerseys. My suspicion is that they didn’t prioritize /envisage the demand our jerseys have now.”

@007burch “So it costs #41k to adorn the new #SuperEagles kit by @Nike.”

“In a country where the minimum wage is #18k, how does “minimum” persons legit adorn this kit while cheering their favourite team at the #WorldCup2018?

@bulis “An average American can afford a Nike Jersey… So you saying an average Nigerian can buy a Nike Jersey for #41,000.”

@Sunnieoguns “Minimum wage = 18k, Jersey = 41k not so good.”

@Iamyungflo “Minimum waga na 18k, how we wan buy 41k jersey.”

@Raycollections “Check other team jersey its far lesser. An original england Jersey is #18,500. So why is ours expensive?

@Selonme “41,000Naira for one Jersey? It’s like using my last NYSC allowee from the Federal Government of NIGERIA to get one Shirt.. Wow.”
