2018 World Cup: IFAB takes final decision on VAR

The International Football Association Board, IFAB, on Saturday took its decision on the use of Video Assistant Referee, VAR, in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Its approval of video assistant referee is one of the biggest changes to the sport in years.

IFAB reached the decision in a meeting in Zurich, where they rubber – stamped the move which has been already backed by FIFA ’s top brass, including president Gianni Infantino.

IFAB said in a press release that the decision “represents a new era for football with video assistance for referees helping to increase fairness in the game.”

FIFA President, Infantino had earlier said, “We came to the conclusion that VAR is good for football.

He added that the final decision to use the technology at the World Cup in Russia will be made when the FIFA Council, world football’s top decision- making body, meets in Colombia later this month.

He added, “We will hope and encourage the council to take a favourable decision.”
