2018 World Cup: Hierro speaks on Ronaldo’s hat-trick, his sudden appointment as Spain boss

Spain coach, Fernando Hierro has reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo’s hattrick against his side in the World Cup Group B match on Friday.

The newly appointed coach also said that the Portugal captain was the difference in the 3-3 draw.

Ronaldo rescued a point for Portugal with a superb free-kick to complete his hattrick and make it 3-3.

He became the oldest player, at 33, to score a World Cup hat-trick.

Spain were aiming for a win with goals from Diego Costa (brace) and Nacho before the Real Madrid man’s late equaliser.

Hierro told his post match conference, “When you play against a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, that kind of thing can happen.”

Hierro was only appointed as Spain coach a day before the World Cup started following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui.

“Our team kept the ball well, but with Cristiano, one moment of inspiration can be enough.”

Speaking on his sudden appointment, the former Real Madrid captain added, “This situation has not been easy for me.

“But you have the chance to work with a team with so many good players, young and experienced, it makes everything much easier.

“Everyone in the team and the staff had a good attitude, and I feel like I’m privileged.”
