2018 World Cup: Eguavoen advises Gernot Rohr on key areas Super Eagles must improve

Former Nigerian coach, Austin Eguavoen, has advised manager, Gernot Rohr on key areas the Super Eagles must improve on during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Eguavoen who represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, however, said Rohr should make changes to the team’s training methods and adopt a new system of defence.

“I think the coach has seen the two games against England and Czech Republic. It’s time to work on it, probably change the way of training and adopt a new system of defending,” Eguavoen told CSN.

“In football you don’t defend with only four players, you defend with the entire team, including the goalkeeper, because if you leave the faults to the defenders only, you are making a big mistake in professional football.

“As for me, I still have faith in the team, it’s not enough to start saying the team is not good because they lost the last two games.

“Mistakes are allowed in football, it’s better they make errors now and work on it, than to make mistakes when the World Cup comes up.”

The Eagles lost back-to-back in their pre-World Cup friendly matches against England (2-1) and Czech Republic (1-0) on 2nd June and 6th June.

Rohr’s men will open their 2018 World Cup campaign on Saturday against Croatia.
