One of Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup Group D opponent, Argentina, on Friday announced that West Ham star, Manuel Lanzini has been ruled out of this year’s tournament in Russia.
Lanzini was in line for a starting spot in Jorge Sampaoli’s team this summer but the attacking midfielder ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Friday morning.
“Manuel Lanzini suffered, in this morning training session, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee,” Argentina confirmed in an official statement.
Lanzini has scored one goal in his four caps for Argentina and worked his way into Sampaoli’s starting XI in World Cup qualifying.
He caught Sampaoli’s eye with five goals in 29 appearances for West Ham last season.
The 25-year-old will be in recovery for several months and is a serious doubt for the start of West Ham’s 2018/19 campaign in the Premier League.
