Ahead of the governorship election in 2015, the APC in Ogun on Tuesday chose Mrs Yetunde Onanuga as the running mate of Gov. Ibikunle Amosun.
Onanuga, 54, hails from Aparaki in Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state. Until her selection, she was a Director of Finance and Administration in the Ministry of Environment in Lagos State.
Onanuga, who holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) and a Masters degree in Business Administration, was formally presented by the Chairman of the party, Alhaji Rokeeb Adeniyi.
The running mate, in an interview with newsmen, expressed gratitude to the leadership of the party and pledged her loyalty to the governor and the people of the state.
“There is no doubt before somebody can emerge, that person must have been a bit loyal. But on emergence, that loyalty has to be in full.
“Now that I’ve emerged, I want to be loyal to the people, loyal to my governor, loyal to the elders and to the youths and to women and all people of Ogun State,’’ she said.
Onanuga dismissed the view that deputy governors were “spare tyres,’’ insisting they should be seen as help mates.
“They are there to assist the governor in achieving his aim.
“I agree that deputy governors should be given portfolio and this depends on what my governor decides to do.
“If he decides otherwise, I will take my position; I will work assiduously to achieve my aim in the state,’’ she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incumbent deputy governor, Mr Segun Adesegun, had since defected to the Social Democratic Party in order to run for the governorship position. NAN
