Senate President, David Mark, yesterday affirmed that a free, fair and credible election was all that is needed to safeguard and sustain democracy in Nigeria, irrespective of the challenges currently threatening the success of the 2015 general elections.
Mark disclosed this while addressing delegates to Saturday’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives’ primary election in his Otukpo, Benue state home where he stressed that Nigerians have come to the inescapable conclusion that democracy is the way to go.
Mark, who expressed satisfaction with the orderly conduct of the election, urged his people to sustain such good conduct in the forthcoming elections, saying: ” I always want to lead by example. You can see from the conduct of my people here that my constituency is most peaceful. You cannot find us quarrelling or creating an atmosphere of disaffection because we do things in a dignified manner.
“We believe in justices, equity and fair play. Above all, we allow the will of God and the people to prevail. For us, the people are the kings and we act in tandem with their wishes and aspirations,” he said.
The Senate President went on to state that when all political actors follow the law and abide by the wishes of the electorate, that is when there would be less rancour and acrimony in the polity.
