Gen Muhammadu Buhari
The Emeritus Bishop of Maiduguri Anglican Diocese, Rt Rev. Kana Mani has called on former head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari to respect his earlier stand with regards to the 2015 presidential race.
The Bishop stated this in a statement made available to DailyPost, on Thursday, in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Mani said before the 2011 presidential election, Gen. Buhari told Nigerians that after the election, he would not vie for any election again, adding that the retired general had made different remarks in recent times.
“I also heard General Buhari when responding to a question on whether or not he would contest the 2015 general election and he said that the decision is not his, but that of his own party, which to me is a contradiction and unlike a statesman”, the Bishop observed.
He said Buhari would do himself a favour by retiring from active politics and joining the highly revered league of former Nigerian leaders, such as General Yakubu Gowon, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Chief Ernest Shonekan, General Olusegun Obasanjo and General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
While calling on General Buhari to join the enviable league and save Nigeria from political tension, he noted that the former leaders were beckon of hope that always preached for peace among Nigerians.
“Let those who had the opportunity of leading this country either as President or Governors or any other political office at any level remember that Nigeria is blessed with capable men and women across the six geo-political zones who can even do better if given the opportunity as no Nigerian is indispensable”, the Bishop stated.
He said it should be a sacred duty of former leaders to raise, mentor and nurture younger leaders.
The cleric urged politicians to be mindful of their utterances and actions capable of threatening the peace and unity of the country.
