The General Abubakar Abdulsalami led National Peace Committee for the 2015 General Elections has called on Nigerians to remain calm over the shift in the dates of the general elections originally scheduled to hold on the 14th and 28th of February.

The committee also called on political parties and their candidates to recommit themselves to the ideals of the Abuja Peace Accord.

The committee, in a statement signed by former Head of State, retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar, yesterday, called on INEC to use the opportunity the postponement offers to enhance its preparedness for the elections, including the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards to ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised.

The committee also commended the international community for their abiding commitment to the conduct of transparent and credible elections in Nigeria in accordance with the provisions of the country’s constitution.

The committee further said that INEC took the decision after consulting with a wide range of stakeholders, notably security agencies, political parties and civil society organisations among others, adding further that the shift in dates was based on the need to allow security agencies put in place necessary measures for the elections throughout the country.

“While taking note of the divergent positions of the political parties on the issue, the committee wishes to commend them for their mature response and commitment to respecting INEC’s decision in the interest of national peace and unity. In particular, it commends the understanding shown by the presidential candidates,” the statement said.
