2015 election: Ogonis in Rivers state pledge support for Buhari

The four Local government areas that make up the Ogoni area in Rivers State have pledged their unflinching support for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari.

The Local government areas, which include Eleme, Tai, Gokana and Khana declared their support for Buhari after the former military Head of State promised to implement the long abandoned UNEP report on Ogoni.

Buhari had pledged his commitment to ensure that the report would be implemented.

The former Military ruler, who was accompanies by top members of the APC, including the national Chairman of the part, John Odiegie-Oyegun, also vowed to complete the abandoned Bodo-Bonny road project.

Buhari said the decision of the Federal Government to abandon the Bodo-Bonny road project was a clear case of incompetence and social injustice, adding that a lot had been taken from Ogoniland and little brought back in return.

The APC presidential candidate called on the people of the area to ensure they get their permanent voters’ cards so as to vote en-masse for the APC at all levels of the general election.

He said, “Your environment has been sentenced to death, much is being taken from Ogoniland but just little is being brought back in return. If I am elected as the president of this country, I will complete the abandoned Bodo-Bonny road project and implement the UNEP report,” the former head of state said.

Earlier, the chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Majesty King G. N. Gininwa, who is also a Royal Majesty in the Ogoni area, in his speech expressed appreciation to General Buhari for accepting to visit Ogoni land.

King Gininwa said “Ogonis have cried a lot. We want a redeemer and we believe you are the one.”

On his part, the Senator representing Rivers South East Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Abe, also declared support for Buhari on behalf of the Ogoni people.
