Churches in Enugu West Senatorial District, comprising Awgu, Aninri, Oji-River, Udi and Ezeagu local government areas of the state, at the weekend held special church services in support of the senatorial aspiration of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
The Churches equally endorsed Ekweremadu for fourth term in the senate.
At Oji River LGA, more than 2000 Pentecostal faithful and pastors under the aegis of the Enugu West Ministers Forum (EWMF) held a One Day Prayer Rally at the National Youth Development Centre, Achi.
Speaking at the prayer rally organised to pray for the lawmaker’s 2015 re-election bid, the guest speaker, Pastor Don Odunze said that what the people needed were selfless leaders like the senator who could protect and fight for the interest of the people.
“Thank you for being a blessing to your people; the Lord will bless you. That which you have started, please do not stop. God will continue to give you the wisdom and strength to remain a source of blessing to your people”, Pastor Odunze said.
Similarly, three bishops of the Anglican Communion prayed for and endorsed the aspiration of the lawmaker and asked that he returned to the Senate in 2015 to finish the good works he had begun in the lives of his people.
The Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma said the Senator’s vast experience and knowledge of legislative procedures stands him out, adding that he is the only aspirant who is fit for the job at the upper chamber of the senate.
“If the people in Benue and Cross River States had endorsed Senate President, David Mark and Senate Leader, Chief Victor Ndoma-Egba to return to the Senate; I see no crime if we in Enugu ask Ekweremadu to continue to represent us at the Senate”, Archbishop Chukwuma said when Ekweremadu visited the All Saints’ Church, GRA, Enugu.
He added: “In the USA, people in the Congress continue to serve for a long time for seriousness of work, for serious legislation and experience. I am saying it here, not because of anything, but if any new person goes from the South East here, who has not been to the National Assembly, they will get nonsense.
“Since you have been there, and whether anybody likes it or not, I am proud to say that in this Enugu State and South East, you are the most performing Senator. Senator Ekweremadu apart from being the Deputy Senate President is also the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament. Anybody else who goes from the senatorial zone or the state will not get that. He has done so much; he has given employment to so many, construction of dams, electricity, scholarship, widowhood empowerment and adult literacy through Ikeoha foundation. The youth development centres are also being built in all the local governments you represent including roads.
“You will go again. Nobody should stop you because you are the pride of the entire South East and we are praying that God will keep you alive and support you in Jesus name, Amen.”
On his part, the Anglican Bishop, Diocese of Enugu North, Rt. Rev. Sustenance Eze commended the lawmaker for his outstanding performance and thanked him for offering himself to serve humanity.
Eze, who spoke on the occasion of the Senator’s visit to the Cathedral Church of St. Mary’s in Ngwo, said that the great performance of the Senator Ekweremadu was enough evidence that he would not fail to serve the people better.
Also while admonishing his congregation at St. Peter’s Parish, Nachi in Udi, to make judicious use of their God-given talents to better the lot of humanity, His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Chijioke A. Aneke who is the Bishop of Udi, likened the Deputy President of the Senate to the biblical Nehemiah, eulogized him as a good steward who strived to serve the people, saying that whatever one is called to do, one must never fail to accomplish it well.
In the same vein, the fiery Enugu Catholic priest, Revd. Fr. Ejike Mbaka had also earlier endorsed the Deputy President of the Senate for the Senate in the 2015 general election.
Revd. Fr. Mbaka who declared the support during the weekly prayer vigil at the Adoration Ministry ground in Enugu, said the Deputy President of the Senate had done so well and deserved to be reelected.
He said: “We have had a Senate President, and we have equally had Senators, but it is Senator Ekweremadu that has given the people of Enugu and the South East the feel of governance.
“Many of the roads and development projects you see around Awgu, Oji-River, Ezeagu, Aninri, and many parts of Enugu and the South East came courtesy of the quality representation by Senator Ike Ekweremadu.
In his reaction, Ekweremadu thanked the church for their support and prayers, adding that he has always lived in the fear of God and the desire to provide quality representation to the people.
“With all your prayers and support, I can boldly say we are morally and spiritually equipped to go into the 2015 election and nobody will stand on our way”, the lawmaker said.
