2014 World Cup play-off: Emenike’s brace gives Nigeria hard fought victory over Ethiopia

Emmanuel Emenike was the star of the show, as his well taken brace gave the Super Eagles a 2-1 win over Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.

The match started with the Walya Antelopes dictating the play with their high tempo and quick passing, but produced only one decent effort, which Vincent Enyeama dealt with superbly. However, the home side had the ball in the net, but none of the match officials failed to spot that and the first half ended without goals.

The Ethiopians took the lead 12 minutes into the second half. A cross from the left wing was fluffed by Enyeama, who had been reliable up till that point and referee Alioum from Cameroun pointed to the centre circle. Keshi reacted by pulling out Oduamadi and throwing on Nosa Igiebor.

Emenike recieved a pass from Igiebor, bullied his way past four Ethiopian players and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the corner. Ahmed Musa recieved a fine reverse pass from Mikel Obi, but saw his shot come off the upright.

The last word was with Emenike. The Fenerbahce man, who was quiet for most of the match, was pulled down by Butako in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. The striker dusted himself and calmly struck the ball past a stranded Tassew.

The second leg comes up on November 16 in Calabar.
