The 2012/2013 season of the Nigeria Premier League, will kick off on February 16 next year, a week after the Africa Cup of Nations ends in South Africa.

The League body confirmed this in a communique, which was issued after its 7th Congress in Abuja on Tuesday. However, it also said the set date was subject to confirmation by the Nigeria Football Federation.

Alloy Chukwuemeka, the spokesman of the 19 clubs that attended the Congress, argued that the date was okay, because by then, the clubs would have finished the registration of players, clear their new players and also conclude other logistics in time for the new season.

“I am sure the clubs will be ready for the new season. They have at least a month and half to tidy up every neccessary arrangement for the commencement of the season,” Chukwuemeka said.

Kano Pillars are the current defending champions of the NPL.
