Two men, Auwalu Tasi’u Gwazaye and Bashir Abubakar Dorayi have been sentenced to 18 months by a Kano Magistrate court for stealing soap worth N9.7m.
The accused were arraigned for criminal conspiracy and theft contrary to Sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code.
The Police Prosecutor, ASP Sani Musa told the court that one Umar Lawan Mangal of Hausawa quarters represented by one Muhammad Ndako Abdul of the same address reported the matter to the police.
According to Musa, Abdul told the police that the accused persons had about two years ago stolen about 3,000 cartons of B29 soap valued at N1.4m at their store located along IBB way in the state metropolis.
He said that they also came and stole another consignment of 2,849 cartons of same soap valued at N12, 820, 500.
The prosecutor said during investigation, police had recovered N3.1m from the accused while the remaining N9, 720, 500, 00 were yet to be recovered.
The accused, however, pleaded guilty to the two-count charges.
However, the court presided over by Chief Magistrate Fatihu Yassar offered the convicts options of N50, 000 fine each.
