2 killed during burial in Rivers

At least two people have been allegedly shot by security personnel around Rumosi in ObioAkpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Trouble started as some youths from Nkpolu community arrived at a mortuary, at Rumosi to carry the corpse of one of their kinsman, Alerechi Woko, who was killed last year during a protest at the Nkpolu axis of the East West Road over the bad state of the road.

Sporadic shooting continued at the popular T-Junction in Rumuagholu community by men suspected to be security operatives, leaving everyone to scamper for safety.

Meanwhile, civil society Organization in Rivers state have condemned the action of security operatives in the fracas.

Secretary of the Rivers Civil Society Organizations, John Ihua who said he was present during the crisis, claimed that the Rivers police command had given the approval for the burial to be held today, but wondered why men of SARS allegedly acted the way they did.

Ihua also disclosed that the chairman of the Rivers Civil Society Organizations, Enefa Georgewill hays a broken neck following the incident while also claiming that more persons have been arrested by the police over the crisis.

“When Aleruchi was about to be laid to mother earth some SARS men came into the community and started shooting and chased away everybody from the community.

“After that, some policemen came again and started destroying people’s properties.

“There was even an attempt by the police to arrest me,” he said

In the meantime, the Rivers State Police Command has dismissed reports of killing of some persons.

The spokesman of the Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, who spoke to DAILY POST correspondent, said the burial of Woko went successfully with the help of security operatives deployed in the area.

He said although there was a little misunderstanding between the police and some people who he described as infiltrators and were there to cause trouble, no live was lost.

Omoni said, “The information I have from the officer that led the operation is that nobody was killed at Nkpolu during the burial of Aleruchi Woko.”
