A 19-year-old man, identified as Happy Okotie was on Monday handed 6-year-jail term by an Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State for stealing.
The convict alongside a 25-year-old man, Kingsley Ebose, were jailed for six years each without an option of fine.
Trial magistrate, RacheaI Ogbevoen , convicted the duo after finding them guilty of a two-count charge of breaking in, entry and stealing proffered against them.
The Police Prosecutor, Patrick Agbonifo explained that the offence was said to have been committed on August 25, at 201 New Benin Street, Oredo area of the State.
Agbonifo, had told the court that the convicts had conspired to commit felony on the said date.
The prosecutor further said the two men broke into a store belonging to one Tessy Okpebiye at night, where they stole some valuable items.
According to him, the stolen items include one Nokia battery, two Samsung Galaxy phones, one laptop and a cash sum of N17,000.
Agbonifo said the stolen items were worth N235,000.
He maintained that the offence contradicts Sections 516 and 411 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48 Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.
