The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended one Nwabuike Enwerem, 18, for allegedly hacking to death his neighbour, Sunday IIaya.
The unfortunate incident happened on Mulianu Street, Ajangbadi area of Lagos State. Enwerem was said to have stabbed the victim on the left side of the neck in the course of a misunderstanding over money meant to be shared by their younger brother.
It was learnt that both boys fought in defence of their younger brothers who were given money after collecting firewood from the bush for a ceremony in their area.
On fetching the firewood, the suspect’s younger brother complained to him that he was short changed by the younger brother of the deceased.
An argument ensued which led to a fight and before anyone knew what was happening, Enwerem, was said to have gone into his parents room and came out with a knife with which he used in hacking the deceased.
Enwerem, who hails from Anambra State, was charged before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court on a one count of murder.
The charge reads, “That you, Nnabaike Enwerem, on December 24, 2014, at about 8.30pm, at Mulianu Street, Ajangbadi, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Sunday Ilaya, aged 18 years, by stabbing him with a knife on the left side of his neck and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”
The police prosecutor, represented by Corporal Lydia Akhadolome prayed the Court to remand the suspect in prison custody because he was in for a murder charge.
The magistrate, Nurudeen Layeni, granted the application by the police.
Layeni said, “The defendant is to be remanded in custody for the first 30 days pending legal advice from the DPP. The police are also to duplicate the case file on time.”
The Magistrate however adjourned the case till March 10, this year.
