16 killed after bus plunges into river in Katsina

DailyPost has gathered that a bus conveying passengers, including children and nursing mothers from Kankia to Katsina state, plunged into a bridge few minutes after it collapsed due to Monday night heavy downpour. The incident occurred at Yar’randa village in Charanchi Local Government Area of the state.

The Kastina State Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bala Senchi who confirmed the incident said the police could not confirm the casualties figure as the search for the missing passengers was still on.

He said policemen had been deployed to the area to control traffic and prevent further accident at the scene.

DailyPost gathered that some dead bodies were recovered from the unmarked ash-coloured bus, out of which four were recovered near Ajiwa dam, some metres away from the scene of the accident, after being washed away by the flowing water. Meanwhile, the corpses had been deposited at the Charanchi General Hospital.

Malam Rabi’u Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary, state Ministry of Works and Housing and an official of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had visited the scene to assess the damage.

Ibrahim said a report would be forwarded to the Katsina State government for prompt intervention.

He condoled with the families of the deceased persons and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died.

An FRSC official who pleaded anonymity said investigation by the corps revealed that the bus driver was moving at a top speed and and was unable to apply his break when he approached the collapsed bridge.”
