14 pregnant girls rescued from illegal maternity home in Abia


An illegal baby factory has been reportedly discovered at Umukpeyi village in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.

The state police command has disclosed that it had rescued 14 pregnant teenagers and ladies in their different trimesters of pregnancy.

The rescue, according to the State’s Police Public Relations Officer, Udeviotu Onyeke, was made possible following an intelligence report that the principal suspect and the proprietor of the illegal maternity home, had been harboring pregnant teenagers in the home for commercial purposes, stating that some of the victims claimed to be from neighboring states like Imo, Anambra, Enugu and Rivers States.

According to the police, the maternity home was being used as a baby factory where teenagers, between the ages of 13 and 19, were conscripted, impregnated by men and on delivery, the babies are then sold and the mothers given measly amount of money.

Udeviotu clarified that the baby factory belonged to one Madam Nma, a purported notorious child trafficking consortium leader in the state.

Report further has it that most of the rescued ladies claimed that they were brought to the home by sympathizers after they were driven away from their homes when it was discovered that they were heavy with unwanted pregnancy.

The police said in their attempt to track the owner of the illegal maternity home down failed, as she evaded arrest. It however assured that efforts were still been made to apprehend her.
