111-year-old woman burnt to death after man sets village on fire over witchcraft


Spiked by the revelation that his family members were responsible for the sudden demise of his father, a 35-year-old man, Mr. Tyoakaa Ijoho stormed his village in Adambge, Vandeikiya Local Government Area of Benue State and allegedly set 10 thatched houses ablaze, killing 111-year-old blind woman, Mama Martha Gyuse Bonko.

An eyewitness account claimed that the embittered Ijoho lost his father to a snake bite recently, and was determined to find the cause of such calamity, thus he consulted an oracle.

It was also gathered that the native doctor, whom Ijoho visited allegedly revealed to him that some of his family members were responsible for the death of his father. The information prompted him to leave his place at Konshisha Local Government Area of the state and headed straight for his village to avenge his father’s death.

Speaking with the press, one of the villagers, Abraham Chafa, said all the efforts his 75 years old mother, Mama Mezaga Chafa, made to save the life of the 111-year-old woman met with brick walls. Consequently, she was caught up in the inferno in one of the thatched houses.

Abraham also said that Ijoho, had abandoned the community 18 years ago only to reappear that fateful day to set the village on fire.

He disclosed further that Ijoho didn’t go scot-free after pepetuating such act.

Abraham asserted that through the help of able-bodied youths and vigilante in the village,he was arrested and handed over to the police in Vandeikya.

Meanwhile, the remains of Mama Martha Gyuse Bonko had been deposited at a private hospital in Tsar Mbaduku. When contacted, Benue State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Daniel Ezeala, said he is yet to be informed of the tragic incident.
