10 injured as suspected gang members clash with OPC in Ibadan

No fewer than ten people were reportedly injured Monday evening in Omi- Adio area of Ibadan when some members of a gang called “Gobe” clash with members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC).

DAILY POST learnt Tuesday morning that the trouble started when about twenty members of the “Gobe” gang, led by one Sarafa, attacked some members of OPC at Ido junction Monday evening.

One of the OPC members simply known as Adigun was said to be seriously injured as a result of dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, machetes, and broken bottles used to attack him by the gang.

A source in the area informed journalists that apart from the OPC members, the rampaging “Gobe” gang members also inflicted injuries on passers -bye,who came to board commercial motorcycles back to their homes at the Ido junction after the working hours on Monday.

The source informed DAILY POST that it took the intervention of a team of policemen from the Omi-Adio police station before the violence was prevented from escalating, as OPC members in the community had already mobilized themselves.

Chairman of OPC in Ido Local Government Area, Comrade Muritala Adekola while speaking with journalists on the matter on Tuesday said he had however reported the attack on his members to police at the Omi-Adio Police Station.

He said that the “Gobe” gang immediately took to their heels when they sighted him and a police team that later stormed the area.

Adekola said that the gang members dropped some of their weapons.

He said members of the gang were criminals who OPC had in the past apprehended and handed over to the police for various criminal activities.

Adekola added that on returning from either police net or prison, the criminals organized themselves into a gang under the leadership of one Sarafa Gobe to wage war against OPC members in the community.
