Men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Nigeria Police, Rivers State Command have dismantled a blockade by armed men suspected to be Kidnappers and armed robbers along the Emohua of the East/West Road in Rivers State.
The Emohua section of the road had seen a lot of kidnappings, rapes, killings and robberies in recent times with the State government paying lips services.
A confrontation between the SARS officers and the armed men led to the killing of the suspected kidnapper in a gun duel.
A SARS official, Sergeant Gift Okoroma who was also hit in the cross fire is now in the hospital.
Speaking with newsmen, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni said the armed men were members of the Deygbam cult group terrorising the East West road.
Omoni said the protest by some residents of Emohua against security agency was uncalled for, adding that the Police had to respond when the armed men fired shots.
“The SARS were on their routine patrol of communities in Emohua when a group Deygbam cult boys engaged our men and of course they had to respond.
“In the course of the shooting one of their men was fatally wounded and our man was also shot. He was taken to UPTH.
Meanwhile, non-indigens in Emohua have maintained that the man who was killed by the SARS operatives was Ajibade Ademisanya, a taxi driver and not a cultist.
